Poker is MEAN
For those who don’t know, Tuesdays are POKER NIGHTS. Last night, the fellas got together over at Casa de Adams (the younger one) and we played some $10 buy-in hold ‘em, as we usually do.
8 fellas played and I felt that I should play aggressive, something I don’t normally do and it worked out well for me. I hit everything I played. I even cracked Mike’s Rockets when 2 jacks hit the board and I had J♦10♦. It was fun for me.
And then it turned ugly.
I was dealt Q♦Q♣ and raised pre-flop 3 times the big blind. The flop came out mostly crap: 6♥4♥2♠ or something like that. Coop was under the gun and bet 1200 (my original raise). I raised him 2500. The two other players folded. River came out another heart. John went all-in and I called. He’d made his flush with 8♥7♥ and chopped my stack in half.
Ouch.
After playing pretty tight for a while, I was down to where my stack was about 4 times the big blind. I had to make a move soon, so when I saw K♠J♠, I figured it was time. I raised a bunch pre-flop and got a couple people out and it rolled around to Jordan who put me all-in. I pondered it for a sec, but figured he had a middle pair or he just thought I would walk away from the hand. I called and I was somewhat relieved when all I saw was A♥8♦. I was even happier when the flop brought me a jack. The poker gods snatched my happiness right away by bringing me a king on the turn, giving me two pair, but giving Jordan a gut shot straight draw since a 10 had also come on the flop. 4 cards in the deck can save him.
Guess which one came…
Q♠
Ouch again.
Still…just made me want to play again. Until next time…

I Totally Blew It
For the past 12 weeks, we have been playing a poker tournament of champions…a buy-in and then a weekly game for points…average score of best 8 weeks…top 3 pays out.We hosted the finals at our house last night. I started the night tied for 3rd and felt good, considering we had 18 people playing and I was on my home field.
And I was the first out.
And I ended up in 6th.
Marginal hands killed me. Pay to see a flop, then don’t catch anything. I think that I might have taken down one big pot all night…the rest of them I ended up folding to other people because my cards were just THAT BAD.
Oh well. Our weekly poker game is pretty cheap entertainment. Good times.

Out-kicked
Rough poker night last night. In what could have been huge for me in me and my friends’ version of the Tournament of Champions, I bluffed at the wrong pot.
My brother brings a friend of his to all of our games and thus far, he hadn’t been to impressive. I think he took some umbrage with the fact that I called him “dead money”. Well, Chris, dead money you are no longer. Here’s the hand:
My hand: J-8 offsuit
My stack: about 1/3 his
The flop: J, 7, 6 rainbow
4th St.: King
At this point is where I went all-in. Chris checked to me and I read him correctly that he did not have the King. Going all-in, I represented it, but he read me correctly and knew I didn’t have it either. He had the stack to call (although it was a large call) and he did.
He out-kicked me with his queen. I only had about 10 outs, an 8 to win or a 7 or 6 to split the pot.
River: Nothing. Goodnight Shane.
Stayed and dealt. I was happy to see my brother go out next…that helped me immensely in the Tournament. I was also pleased that “Dead Money” won.
Nice work, Chris.
